The August Markit Survey shows, as our headline suggests, that the Scottish employment market continues to be robustly healthy. For all employees, the good news is that salaries and wages are increasing for both contract and permanent staff, although the rate of increase is greater in the UK as a whole than it is in Scotland. Moreover, in general, demand for both temp and permanent staff continues to be strong, although, as we have seen for some time now, candidate availability is increasingly restricted.
When it comes to our own area of expertise, Markit includes Engineering with Construction and notes that it was one of only three (along with the IT/Computing and Secretarial/Clerical sectors) that recorded stronger growth in demand for permanent roles north of the border than in the UK as a whole. For temp/contractors roles, Construction was again ranked third in terms of growth in Scotland, although Markit reported that this growth had softened a bit compared to last month.
As I noted above, like all other sectors, Construction and Engineering firms suffers from candidate shortages. WIth the UK economy as a whole showing the highest rate of employment on record, it's not surprising that many firms are finding it hard to recruit the quality of candidates they want - but that's what we're here for!
