The monthly Markit report on employment continues to show impressive growth in all sectors, but for the one we're interested in, namely 'Engineering & Construction' the rises are particularly marked, as the table here shows.
In general terms, the (hourly) rates of pay for contractors in Scotland continued the trend from April 2015 by growing in September and there was also an impressive growth in the rate of wage inflation from the previous month's (seven month) low, while for perm jobs the rate of wage inflation was the best since January this year. In other words, pay is improving, albeit there are variations between different disciplines.
Wage/salary inflation is, of course, a reflection of the problems of finding candidates. Skill shortages show no sign of going away any time soon.
Certainly, all these data reflect what we see in the Peace office: we're flying high with jobs coming in daily in our Trades, Professional and Contract Divisions. As a result, I don't see much change in the Markit report for October (but watch this space, just in case!).
