Senior Electrical Engineer – Transmission & Distribution

Overview
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Electrical Engineer to join a growing Transmission & Distribution (T&D) team supporting major infrastructure projects across Scotland. The successful candidate will play a key role in the design, delivery, and technical leadership of high-voltage electrical projects associated with transmission networks, substations, and renewable energy integration.
This position offers the opportunity to work on nationally significant energy infrastructure projects that support the transition to a low-carbon energy system.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead and coordinate electrical engineering activities for transmission and distribution projects ranging from 11kV to 400kV.
• Deliver engineering design packages for substations, grid connections, cable systems, and associated electrical infrastructure.
• Provide technical oversight for HV plant design including transformers, switchgear, protection systems, and auxiliary systems.
• Review and approve electrical calculations, specifications, drawings, and technical documentation.
• Support multidisciplinary project teams through feasibility, FEED, detailed design, construction, commissioning, and handover phases.
• Interface with clients, utility providers, contractors, and regulatory stakeholders.
• Ensure compliance with relevant UK standards, Grid Code requirements, and health & safety legislation.
• Mentor and support junior engineers and contribute to technical development within the engineering team.
• Participate in design reviews, HAZID/HAZOP workshops, FAT/SAT activities, and commissioning support when required.
• Support project planning, budgeting, risk management, and resource forecasting activities.
Required Qualifications & Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
• Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or working toward chartership through a recognised institution such as Institution of Engineering and Technology.
• Minimum 8–10 years of experience within transmission and distribution or power infrastructure projects.
• Strong understanding of UK electrical standards and utility engineering practices.
• Experience with HV substation design and/or overhead line and cable systems.
• Familiarity with protection and control philosophies, earthing studies, load flow studies, and short-circuit analysis.
• Proficiency in engineering software such as ETAP, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, AutoCAD, or equivalent tools.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
• Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to project sites across Scotland.
Desirable Skills
• Experience supporting renewable energy integration projects including wind, solar, or battery storage.
• Knowledge of IEC standards and offshore transmission systems.
